Out of the Starting Gate

Welcome to the kickoff issue of Optimal Health and Fitness for Moms! In each issue, we'll strive to provide information from industry experts that will help you achieve optimal health, boost energy levels and look great. Look for a wide range of topics including fitness, nutrition, healthy living, peak performance, energy and endurance.

First off, I want to thank you for your support of Optimom Fitness.  Optimom Fitness kicked off the website on July 1 2003.  For just August there has already been over 19,000 unique visitors to the website.  This validates to me that a lot of people want to achieve optimal health and fitness.

In my first column, I'd like to step back and offer some insight behind the concept of Optimom Fitness. The story really starts with me. I've always loved fitness and sports, and since I was young, these two activities have played a major role in my life. So, what do I do? A child of the 80s, I watched a few too many movies like The Secret of My Success and Wall Street, decided to go off to college, major in economics, and then make a lot of money in the business world. Sounds cool, right? Sometimes it was, but for the most part, it just wasn't fun. Despite doing well, I never looked forward to going to work. The passion just wasn't there.

Then came the joyous day that I quit my job for the birth of my first daughter. I played mom for a few years, and added a second baby girl to the mix. During this time, I knew that as the girls got older, I wanted to work in some capacity, but couldn't imagine taking time away from them to do something I didn't like. My passion and recreational life had always been wellness-related, but how could that translate into my professional life?

For the past several years, there were two major forces in my life. On one side, lots of mommie friends. Smart, attractive, successful women that seemed to be struggling with regaining their pre-mom figure. Many couldn't find the time or motivation to exercise. Others did participate in exercise and diet programs, but few achieved desired or long-term results. A few turned to very unhealthy diet pills. And sadly, some started to accept the notion that a larger figure was just part of motherhood. Plus, I observed a lot of moms lacking energy such as experiencing energy drops during the day, and sometimes just not having enough energy to enjoy their kids and everything that life has to offer.

On the other side, I started to target my interests in the field of endurance sports and nutrition. And that's when it started to click, there was a connection. Motherhood is an endurance sport. Endurance athletes strive to be as productive as possible for as long as possible. Moms are no different. We require the energy and the vitality to remain strong and positive throughout an active, and sometimes challenging, day -- and then demand the capability to wake up the next day and do it again and again.

At Optimom Fitness, our passion is peak performance training for moms. Peak performance doesn't mean you need to go out and run a marathon or do some extreme workout routine (though that would be cool). It's about achieving your personal best. It about enjoying greater vitality in your life. It's about closing the gap between where you are today and the goal of where you strive to be.

So, that's the story of Optimom Fitness. What about you? What's your story? What's your wellness goal -- do you want to lose 10 pounds, improve your muscle tone, or even compete in a triathlon? Let's even look at the bigger picture...what are your goals? Do you want to start a business? Do you want to learn how to be a gourmet cook or maybe how to scuba dive? What dreams would you like to pursue? No matter what your goal is, you need lots of energy and endurance to go after it. Let's face it, moms are busy people. If you want to do something special for yourself, you've got to find the time to make it happen. That means being on-the-go all day and maybe sleeping less. If your body is properly conditioned and you are committed to eating healthy, wholesome foods, you can capture all the energy you need to accomplish everything you'd like to achieve, plus look great in the process.

I'd like to hear from you. I invite you to e-mail me at samantha@optimomfitness.com. I'm very interested in hearing your thoughts, questions and suggestions. In future issues, look for my column to focus on fitness, energy and peak performance.

Thanks for your support, Samantha.
